The Off-Label Beautyblender Trick That Will Give You Perfect Skin

I have something truly shameful to admit: Prior to just a few months ago, I had never used a beautyblender. As someone who actively refuses to fiddle with brushes or “tools,” preferring instead to use my hands to smear on foundation and concealer in 30 seconds or less, I didn’t think I had any use for the hot-pink teardrop-shaped sponge everyone owns and swears by. Also, the more people tell me to try something, the more likely I am to not, but that’s 100-percent my problem.

Somehow, though, I managed to amass a small collection of beautyblenders on my desk over time. I had two black ones, two pink ones, and one “colorless” variation and hadn’t tried any of them. Then one day, I did, and finally saw the light. It was a real “come to Jesus” moment, if you will.

The life-changing pink sponge in question.

The life-changing pink sponge in question.

I now know primer, foundation, and concealer never go on better than they do with a damp beautyblender, but there’s one thing that I think most people are missing out on, and it’s the fact that the sponge is way, way more versatile than it seems at first glance.

In the name of experimentation, I started soaking my beautyblender in various face mists in lieu of water before applying makeup. This is easily the best idea I’ve ever had: With the addition of the nourishing ingredients a good mist should provide, skin looks dewier and better hydrated than it does with water alone. Foundation blends better, and it tends to last longer as well, since the mist effectively “sets” it. In a way, this approach turns your makeup into skin care, too—as does my second revelation, which is that you can use the beautyblender to apply a perfectly even layer of moisturizer or serum. And! It makes it super easy to combine a little bit of said moisturizer with your foundation of choice, rendering it more hydrating and even sheerer for less coverage, if that’s what you’re into.

The course of striving for perfect skin never did run smooth, but armed with a beautyblender and a little bit of off-label creative thinking, you can get one step closer to the radiant, angelic complexion you deserve. Just be sure to wash that thing every few uses. It gets so gross.
